CSS - An Introduction

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets are used by web sites to keep track of color, font and position styles within a web site. CSS can be a separate file used site wide or lines of code specifically used on one web site page. More information on both types of CSS uses will be discussed in 2006 so stay tuned.

Pros
CSS keeps a web site's navigation and text content consistent with color and font style. This control makes it a snap for a webmaster to go in and change font styles site wide. Text heirarchy on each page can be kept consistent when using the same style tags. Web sites load faster because the designer can use HTML text with CSS to create similar layout effects without using graphics.

Cons
Like all things in life there can be too much of a good thing. Although there are standards in code for using CSS not all of the browsers treat or display the same. Especially when it comes to CSS control over graphic placement and layers. What works in IE may not work for Netscape and vice versa. Make sure that your web sites are tested in IE, Netscape, PC and Mac platforms if you are using CSS heavily for text and graphic placements. You might be surprised what you see in each test.
