JULY 2007After recently doing some research and training for a client on adding RSS features to their site, I realized that many of you on this list might be interested in knowing about RSS as well. This month I will talk about adding pre-written and constantly updated RSS content to your site.
Happy Summer!
Using RSS Content On Your SiteHaving a hard time coming up with content for your site? Or do you have a site that would benefit from recent news articles? Think about using RSS. It is not hard to set up and can really add value to your site for your visitors. Get the URLFirst thing you need is the URL for the RSS feed you would like to use on your site. The URL should end with a file extension of .xml. For example, the URL for the Tiger Studios RSS feed is: http://www.tiger-studios.com/tigerstudios_rss.xml. Get the JavascriptGo to a service that will convert the URL you have into code you can add to your web site page to show the RSS content. I use RSS Box Viewer but there are other script generators out there, like FeedDigest.com. Fill out the form with the URL of the RSS feed, how many items from the feed you want to list, style requirements, and submit the form. The script you need will be generated. Get the ContentCopy the script that is generated from the above service and go to the page on your site that you want to add RSS content to. Simply paste the code in the right spot within the HTML. Save the file. Upload to your server and see content being refreshed on your site daily. RSS Content Usage ExamplesI have a few web site examples using the generated Javascript to show RSS content. Both the GayArizona.com and GayLasVegas.com sites show RSS content on their home pages under the News Alert headers. The Denver Orchid Society web site uses RSS content for their Orchid News section.
