JUNE 2006

Can you believe we are half-way through the year. Before you know it we will be singing Christmas carols again. But before that happens I intend to enjoy being warm for a change and hitting the outdoor pool as much as possible. I hope all of you have a wonderful Summer with your family and friends. Just remember the sun screen.

Happy Summer!

Ask Tiger Studios

Q: Can animation be added to the email?

A: Yes, but is it really necessary? An animation would pull in just like a graphic would on the email but it would take much longer for the user to download possibly making them cranky. If you have a great animation that is useful and want your users to see it, link to it in the email and have them see the animation on your web site — not through the email newsletter/campaign.

Setting Up An Email Newsletter or Marketing Campaign

Starting up an email newsletter, such as the one you are reading now, or an email marketing campaign is not a difficult task. There are some basic things you need in order to get one up and going. It is a great way to market your services and products and keeping your name fresh in your prospective or current client's mind.

What You Need To Start

There are a few things you need to get started with an email newsletter/campaign. First, you need good quality content that will be useful to your audience. Next, you need a server to host any graphics you might use for your newsletter/campaign. If you already have a web site you already have a server. And last, but not least, you need either an email application that will allow you to send out HTML emails or a service like Constant Contact, Lyris or Exact Target to send out the emails for you from their servers.

What Is It Really?

An email newsletter/campaign is just like a web page. It can have graphics and links to other pages within your web site or external sites. The page is mailed to your audience's Inbox and viewed using their email application, like Outlook or Eudora. Some applications will not display your message in the exact way you had designed it. Always give your audience a link to view the newsletter/campaign as a page on your web site or as a text only page so they can see the message correctly.

Don't Forget

Because of anti-spam laws there are a few things you have to have on your email newsletter/campaign. You need to have the physical business address somewhere on the email — I like to add it at the bottom. You also have to have an opt-out or unsubscribe button on the email so people can unsubscribe if they are not interested.
