APRIL 2005

As many of you know by now that when I came back from my Search Engine marketing workshop in Seattle I had lots of ideas. In fact, I have already started to implement many ideas on the Tiger Studios web site, as well as several of my clients. I thought it would be good to continue last month's article on optimizing your web site with information that I learned in the workshop. Hopefully there will be some ideas you can bring into your own marketing plan.

Enjoy!

Q: Why do you ask to see my web site statistics? What is so important about them?

A: Good web site statistics will tell a marketer how people are finding your web site and how they are using the web site. All of this statistical information allows the marketer to adjust content, keywords and usablilty of your web site to bring in more clients and revenue.

Search Engine Optimization Tips

Last month I talked about 2 types of search engine marketing: paid and natural. Today I will concentrate on ideas for natural, or free, marketing and optimization that you can use on your web site.

Use about 3 keywords for each major page of your web site.
Too many keywords can cause the content to sound weird or stilted. Do some research on those keywords before you place them into your content. Just because you think it is a keyword that potential clients will use does not make it so. Find out how many people use that keyword and see if there might be a better keyword to use for your business.

Write emotional content.
Don't get caught up in text that tells how wonderful your product or company is. Find out what your ideal client is and write for them. Find out what their emotions are and what kind of problems they have run into using similar products or services. Sympathize with their emotions and show that you understand what they are going through. Talk about how your product or service will better their lives.

Usability of your site is just as important as optimization.
If the search engine brings the potential clients to you but your site is unusable that is lost revenue. Make sure people can easily find their way around your site, purchase products from your shopping cart, and contact you with a huge project that will take millions of dollars to complete!
