Tiger Studios Newsletter: March/April 2008 Issue

This month I thought I would talk a little about what fonts are used for HTML text on a web site. HTML text is text you can select and highlight with your mouse when you are on a web site. This text is searchable by search engines and prefered to graphical text which is not searchable.

Happy Spring!

Usable Web Site Fonts

There are standard browser fonts that are used for web sites. These fonts are found on most computer systems whether you use a Macintosh or a PC which is why they are considered safe to use.

Using CSS any font can be used in the layout of your web site, but be aware that should the users system not have the font you are referencing it will default to a standard browser font. When this happens the text will end up flowing different than what you want, be larger or smaller than you were expecting, or causing overlap or breaking up of your design layout.

Please note that the fonts mentioned below are showing in that font. So, for example, Arial is showing in the font Arial, Times in the font Times. For Web and Winddings an example is shown to the right of the font name.

Sans-serif: Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet MS

These fonts do not have the "bars" or serifs at the tops and bottoms of letters. It is good to use these for bodies of text on your web page as they were designed to be easy to read on a computer monitor.

Serif: Georgia, Times New Roman

For a web site, use these for headings and subheadings where they are larger and easier to read.

Display: Arial Black, Comic Sans, Courier New, Impact

These fonts should be used sparingly as they are specialty fonts. Either extra bold or a little funky, you don't want to have users read large blocks of text in any of these fonts.

Symbol: Webdings ABC123, Wingdings ABC123

These 2 fonts, usually used for specialty icons like arrows or boxes, are not 100% web safe like the previous fonts. You might want to create a graphic of your symbol instead of relying on HTML so that it is consistent across all computers.
