Happy New Year! Using Video On A Web SiteAdding video to a web site is easy. Choosing the file format for the video can be harder. WMV, MOV, Flash, RealPlayer, streaming, downloading, how are you to choose? Video For The MassesFlash video is a good choice for users on both PC and Mac platforms. All browsers use Flash players already so there are usually no additional downloads needed by the user to see the video. To create a Flash video you need to first pull in a QuickTime movie into Flash. Make sure you add some video controls so that the user can pause, play, rewind, etc. the video when they want. Then save the Flash file as an .swf and add the file to your web site. Another Video OptionAnother option is to just link your video clip to the web site using a button or text link. If you choose this option I would strongly suggest also adding a link for the user to download the player they might need to view your video. So, if you want to put a video with a .wmv extension, make sure you give the user a link to download the Windows Media Player as well. This will be the same for Quicktime or RealPlayer videos. Download or StreamingMost of the time you will only be able to add videos to your site by having the user download the video to play. Using Flash will allow you to preload some of the video and then start playing it before it is fully downloaded. That way the user does not have to wait a long time. In order to stream your video you will need to choose a service that has a server that will allow for streaming video. Ask your hosting company if they offer that service.
